Berleyila: A Modern Calligraphy Font

It was a late afternoon when I opened the design file for the seasonal sale graphic. The client wanted something bold, something that would stand out in a crowded feed. I scrolled through my font library, and there it was—Berleyila. A handcrafted script from the Polem foundry, designed entirely by hand. It had a warmth, a personality, that felt just right for the campaign.

Visual Style and Personality

Berleyila is a premium font with a distinct visual style. Its curves are fluid, its strokes vary in weight naturally, and its overall feel is both elegant and approachable. It doesn’t scream for attention but commands it with subtlety. This makes it ideal for campaigns that need to feel personal yet professional.

The font has a friendly, almost handwritten quality, which gives it a sense of authenticity. It’s not overly ornate, but it carries enough detail to make a statement. For a brand looking to connect emotionally with its audience, Berleyila can be a powerful tool.

Real Campaign Use Cases

During a recent online course launch, I used Berleyila for the main headline on the landing page. The font added a touch of creativity without overwhelming the design. It worked well alongside a clean sans serif for the body text, creating a balanced hierarchy that guided the viewer’s eye naturally.

On Instagram, I paired Berleyila with a minimalist layout for a content series. The font stood out on dark backgrounds, making the captions pop. It also worked well as a logo-style text on social media posts, adding a unique identity to the brand’s visual language.

Readability and Digital Visibility

One of the first things I checked was how Berleyila performed on mobile screens. The font holds up well at larger sizes, making it suitable for headlines, banners, and thumbnails. However, it’s not the best choice for small text or dense paragraphs. In digital ads, where space is limited, it works best as a decorative title rather than a body font.

For YouTube thumbnails, Berleyila added a personal touch that made the video titles more engaging. It was especially effective when used in combination with bold colors and simple graphics. On Pinterest, it helped create a cohesive aesthetic across pins, reinforcing brand recognition without being too flashy.

Best Suited for Short Headlines and Decorative Titles

Berleyila excels in short, impactful text. It’s perfect for callouts, sale announcements, and quote graphics. Its organic flow makes it ideal for branding elements like logos, headers, and campaign labels. It can also be used creatively in editorial designs, such as magazine covers or event flyers.

However, it’s less suited for long-form copy or formal corporate communication. If the goal is clarity over style, a more structured typeface might be a better fit. That said, when used thoughtfully, Berleyila can add character to any design without sacrificing readability.

Font Pairing and Design Integration

When working on a digital ad set, I paired Berleyila with a modern sans serif for contrast. The clean lines of the sans serif provided a strong foundation, while the script font added a creative flair. This combination worked well for both web banners and email promotions.

For a branded template pack, I used Berleyila as the primary display font, complemented by a classic serif for subheadings. This created a timeless look that felt both professional and inviting. It also allowed for flexibility across different platforms and formats.

Practical Considerations

Before finalizing the design, I made sure to check the included styles, alternates, and ligatures. These features allowed for more nuanced typography, giving the campaign a polished look. The font also supports multiple languages, which was important for a global audience.

Commercial licensing was another key factor. Since the client planned to use the font in various marketing materials, including merchandise and client campaigns, having the right license was essential. Berleyila’s licensing terms were clear and flexible, making it a reliable choice for professional use.
